Biography

Andrej Thompson is a Brussels based composer and saxophonist whose output ranges from solo performances of free improvisation to large scale works for wind orchestra. The music embraces juxtaposition, contrast and exploring time perception and the boundaries between composition and improvisation. Musical influences include Josef Matthias Hauer, Olivier Messiaen and Tim Berne. After leading projects in Slovenia and Denmark he relocated to Brussels where he undertook a residency at Werkplaats Walter in 2023 exploring and developing original compositions for small ensemble. The residency lead to the creation of four albums; Transfiguring Photograms, Trinity: Consciousness, Art and Hypostasis, Infinite Reflections and Andrej Thompson + Piergiorgio Pirro. Another four albums are planned for recording in the autumn of 2026.
